Located in Himachal Pradesh, the Spiti Valley exists as a high-altitude valley which reaches 4,270 meters (14,000 feet) above sea level. Spiti Valley borders Tibet on its eastern side, yet Ladakh exists north of it before reaching Kinnaur in the southeast direction. On the northwestern side, Lahaul stands with Kullu positioned to the southern edge. Located in the Indian Himalayas Spiti Valley operates as the country’s least dense population zone while offering a desolate and cold desert landscape.
The Lahaul and Spiti district contains Spiti Valley, which consists of the government subdivisions Kaza and Kyelang. Kaza functions as the main administrative center at 3,800 meters (12,467 feet) among all of Spiti, while Kyalecthang exists within Lahaul Valley. A road connects these two segments, although snow closure during winter and spring months makes the path impossible to cross. Spiti Valley follows Himachal Pradesh’s system of single-line administration because it is a designated tribal area. This assures that Kaza’s local administration and the state’s higher authorities can communicate directly.
